都心から房総方面へ向かう特急型車両のデザイン。房総半島の白浜、菜の花、房総の海をモチーフに255系で確立したデザインイメージをE257系500番台で継承・進化させた。255系は国鉄からJRへと分割民営化された初期の頃に開発された特急型車両の一つで、国鉄時代と一線を画するデザインは、鉄道ルネッサンスといわれた。
